Do Anime Characters Look White to Japanese People? (Interview)

To the people saying it is just westerners projecting their own race onto anime characters, you are wrong. If you look at classical Japanese or Chinese art and how they depicted themselves, there will be no doubt that they resemble Asians. Same with African, Indian, European or any other historical artworks. The racial character of the people depicted in paintings, sculptures etc is unmistakable and resembles that of their creators to anyone who looks at it.

Take Disney movies for example. You know Tiana from Princess and the Frog is Black. You know Moana is Polynesian. You know Riley from Inside Out is White. You know Aladdin is Arab. There is never any question as to the race of the characters.

This is a phenomena unique to anime where so many people are asking why the characters resemble a racial group other than those of it's producers. And it isn't just Whites who will tell you they look White either. There are people from all racial groups who ask that same question. I've even known Asians to ask this same question.

This video was fascinating. Anime characters seem Japanese to themselves because culturally they are even if they have blue eyes and blonde hair. However It does seem that theres an attraction to the European phenotype but it seems to be much deeper than that. But I just realized something interesting …I love anime and when i see blonde blue eyed characters I associate them with being European looking. But one character stands out to me …Akuma from street fighter…hes black… but he just always felt Japanese to me…it never occurred to me that he would be anything else…however the Afro samurai very much feels black/African…maybe because afro is in the title…crazy the brain work…time to watch some anime.
